René Pape received his musical education in his native city of Dresden (Kreuzchor and Musikhochschule Carl Maria von Weber). He made his debut at the Berlin State Opera while still a student in 1988 and has been a member of the company ever since. His roles include König Marke, König Heinrich, Pogner, Fasolt, Hunding, Gurnemanz, Sarastro, Figaro, Leporello, Don Giovanni, Philip II, Faust/Mephisto and Boris Godunov. He has appeared at all the major opera houses and concert halls in Europe, Japan, and the USA, and at the Bayreuth, Glyndebourne, Lucerne, Orange, Salzburg, St. Petersburg White Nights, and Verbier festivals. Included among his recordings are Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Chicago Symphony, Sir Georg Solti), Fidelio/Rocco, Lohengrin and Tannhäuser (conducted by Daniel Barenboim), Tristan und Isolde/König Marke (Antonio Pappano), Die Zauberflöte/Sarastro (conducted by Claudio Abbado), Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s Creation and The Seasons (Sir Georg Solti), Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 (Sir Colin Davis), Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (Daniel Barenboim and Franz Welser-Möst). TV appearances and DVD productions: Le Nozze di Figaro/ Figaro, Daniel Barenboim conducting and for DGG from the Metropolitan Opera New York Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg/Pogner, Tristan und Isolde/König Marke, Fidelio/Rocco under the direction of James Levine, Verdi: Messa da Requiem for EMI (Antonio Pappano). Television portrait within the series Maestro for ARTE and other channels (premiere television broadcast in June 2006).
